Adding a fence or wall to your property adds character and can be a valuable asset to your home. When planning, keep in mind that your property is part of a larger community. Residential zoning codes have been written to reinforce the safety of residents through home and properties that provide “eyes on the street,” as well as encourage social interaction. So before you break out the power tools, take a look at these tips:
- Walls and fences generally may be 42 inches or less along the front facade and in some ares taller (up to 6 feet).
- Retaining walls also have guidelines for length and height (see zoning codes for specifics).
- Consider leaving some space between your property line and walls and fences.
- Keep in mind that the finished side of a two-sided fence should always face the street, lake, park, trail, or other public area.
